Marcel Broodthaers' 1972 exhibition at Jack Wendler's gallery in London was a small, quiet event that greatly impressed me. In the pub afterwards I shyly mentioned that I was working with postcards of rough seas, and he told me something about his own postcard projects. Now long afterwards, I've acknowledged this brief encounter by making two works that refer both to Broodthaers' film Voyage on the North Sea and to my own extended series of 'rough sea' postcard works.
